Mary Blackmountain on daily life at home on the Navajo reservation | By Naima Clark

James and Mary's experience on the Navajo reservation paints a vivid picture of the hardships many people face in rural or underserved areas. Living without running water or electricity until recently must have been incredibly challenging.

James says “Water wasn't easy. It was about a mile away. We had to carry water back and forth.”

It is frustrating to hear how the agencies on the reservation that were supposed to offer support and services did not follow through. Especially when it comes to critical things like plumbing and electricity, as well as snow plowing in the winter.
James says,” Sometimes I have to do things on my own, you know. Plumbing work, electricity work. If something goes wrong, I work on that."

It is hard to find help in these remote areas, which seems like an enormous challenge. The rise in cost for groceries, gas, and basic supplies further demonstrates the financial strains and difficulties for communities in remote areas which can put a strain on families.

To me, it seems like James and Mary have experienced firsthand what it is like to be overlooked or neglected by the systems that are meant to provide for their community and their home.

Their experience living on the Navajo Reservation has opened my eyes to how blessed I am. It's easy to take for granted having running water or electricity when they’re readily available. But for many people, these are luxuries that aren’t always guaranteed.

James and Mary have persevered through so much and despite all the challenges they faced, they still love their home and community.

Gratitude, especially when you compare your situation to that of others, can be such a powerful lens through which you view the world. It has helped me to appreciate all that I have.

It has also allowed me to empathize with others and want to bring awareness to other people's struggles. Hearing their story, has made me want to actively support those who are underserved in their communities.
