In this unprecedented time, we are witnessing the power we each have to impact the whole. Our individual and collective actions have curbed the spread of a virus, brought measurable healing to our planet and grinded our economy to a halt. We have an opportunity to move forward with consciousness and intentionality about how we spend and invest our money, because we have now seen how much our money has power. At Willow, we believe the key is heart-centered leadership, and that any change “out there” has to start within ourselves first. Listening to and acting from the heart will guide us into the world we want to create.

Leading from structures and logic does not always serve, leading from the heart does. Change is the external event or situation that happens. Transition is the inner mental and physical process each of us goes through when we encounter a change whether the change is intended or a surprise. We all may have the same change happening to us right now with COVID-19, but the timeline for transition is different for different people.

For people who have had many unexpected changes done to them (changes they did not choose) and who have been systematically excluded from the mainstream, transitions can take much longer. Health literacy is one of the critical factors in health disparities. The greatest opportunities for reducing health disparities are in empowering individuals and changing the health system to meet their needs. We cannot expect people to adopt the health behaviors and take the actions we champion as clinicians without clear communication, supportive activities to build skills, and organizational changes to make it possible for patients to follow through with our recommendations. Fresh food is a basic human right. Within the first two weeks of the COVID-19 public health crisis, food insecurity was already magnifying, particularly among BIPOC communities who were experiencing higher rates of hunger, food insecurity, and diet-related disease due to structural inequities. Women Roots Farm, a regenerative farm in Massachusetts, is actively working with BRIDGE to increase access to vibrant local farms, skill sharing, and education. Learn how this partnership has enabled more equitable, participatory practices in and around local food systems, and hear from Jenn Salinetti about how Indigenous farming practices provide healthy, vibrant, nutrient-dense plants that strengthen the health of our communities.
